National Exercise Phoenix Park - Sept 2006


The Civil Defence network in the UK was set up after World War Two, when the threat of nuclear attack by Russia was thought to be a possibility. The service was disbanded in 1968, but some vehicles remain in the hands of preservationists.
Ireland still maintains a nationwide network and below are a selection of a few of the Irish appliances.


SE Dublin AFS


Formerly with West Midlands as D91 NOX, this Dennis RS133/Carmichael, 87 D 38784 is with SE Dublin AFS and was photographed in St Annes Park in July 2007 .

SW Dublin AFS


SW Dublin's AFS appliance in attendance at the Pheonix Park Motor Car Racing on SAT 12th Aug.

"Getting ready for Lahinch" - AFS members, Robert Burke, Joe Redmond (Instructor), Mick O'Dwyer, John Paul O'Dwyer and James O'Dwyer of South Tipperary with their two appliances, GMC 3500, recently acquired from Sth Tipp Fire Service, 90 TS 2236 and Dennis DS 151 - 85 D 8029.

Sth Tipperary Civil Defence river rescue unit

This Land Rover/Ambulance is with Westmeath CD Unit.


Previously with Somerset Fire & Rescue this 1985 Dodge G13C/Saxon - C 999 DYB - is now in service with Civil Defence in Dublin as 85 D 8368. This photo was taken at the 4th Annual Pumpathon in Athy on Saturday 28th May 2005.


Photographed on a Civil Defence excercise in 2005 this 1983 Dennis RS133, 83 W 245, previously served with Waterford City. It originally was a Hereford & Worcester appliance.


Kerry CD have restored this Bedford - 4891 YI


Based in Clogheen, at the foot of the Vee, is this 1982 Land Rover L4P - 82 D 2932.


This 1998 Civil Defence Fire & Flood Response Land Rover is with Wicklow CD.


Formerly with Kildare Fire & Rescue 86 KE 1231, Bedford TL/HCB Angus, is now based in Durrow with Laois AFS.


Ford Transit PC with Cork City.


This Dodge is with Waterford City.

The former Limerick City fire station in Thomas St. is now home to Civil Defence unit.



1992 Renault, the middle vehicle is a 1998 Mitsubishi Delica and the vehicle on the right is a 1992 Nissan pickup.
